The Prime Minister said overnight he was a human being who made mistakes and meant no offence to the attendant.
His comment followed a report in News Limited newspapers that he berated the 23-year-old flight attendant on a flight from Papua New Guinea to Australia after attending a meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum.
The reports said Mr Rudd was angry that food he was offered did not accord with his no-red-meat diet.
They said an official report filed by the head of the VIP Fleet Group Peter Wood confirmed the behaviour.
Speaking in London early this morning Mr Rudd confirmed there was an incident during the flight. As I recall it was a flight, I think, from Port Moresby and I had a discussion with, I think, one of the attendants about the provision of food," Mr Rudd said.
"It didn’t last very long and if anyone is offended by that, including the attendant concerned, of course I apologise."
Mr Rudd said he had not seen the attendant weeping and that after the exchange he told another crew member "not to worry about it.".
Asked if he had a temper problem, Mr Rudd said he was not perfect.
"Prime ministers make mistakes," he said.
"I’m sure I’ve made mistakes. That would be one of them and if people have been offended I apologise for it. If I upset anybody on that particular flight I’m really sorry. I apologise for it."
