AUSTRALIA-SUPERMARKET CHAIN RAISES au$5 MILLION FOR FARMERS.

Supermarket retailer Woolworths expects to raise more than $5 million towards assisting drought-affected farmers and rural communities through a major national program taking place tomorrow.

All profit generated from trading on Friday, February 20 in Woolies’ 780 stores Australia-wide will go towards emergency financial support to farming families and help rebuild rural communities affected by drought.

More than $10m was raised through similar Backing Our Farmers fundraising programs in the past two years, with profits managed and distributed through the Country Women’s Association.

In addition to individual emergency assistance, funds raised in 2009 will be used to assist with community building and maintenance projects, further guaranteeing farming communities not merely survive, but get back on the road to recovery.

CWA Queensland president, Marian Mudra, said a number of avenues for assistance were available, and she encouraged rural communities not to be hesitant in seeking help. Full details and funding application forms are available by calling 1800 237 876.

In 2008 the money assisted more than 3000 families with emergency bills and daily expenses. Funds were also used to contribute to research into sustainable farming practices.

In addition to the money raised on Backing our Farmers Day, Woolworths has announced a $1m donation to the Australian Red Cross for emergency relief in Victoria and $150,000 to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Appeal.
