Australia-Supermarket raises AU$7 million for flood and fire victim farmers.

AUSTRALIA-$7 MILLION FOR FARMERS.

For the third consecutive year, Woolworths will donate the entire day’s profit from all customer purchases made on Friday, February 20 to help farming families and communities across the country.

This year, Woolworths will hand over more than $7 million, following the success of its latest Backing Our Farmers day.

Held last Friday, the profit from Woolworths’ 792 supermarkets was $7,065,546, surpassing the target of $5 million and bringing the total raised during the past years to more than $17m.

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) will distribute the funds to farming families, with a third of the money raised provided to Landcare.

At Roma last Friday advice on federal issues wasn’t on the shopping list for most locals, but their local Member was happy to provide it while scanning their groceries and packing their shopping bags.

LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott gave his support to the Woolworths Backing Our Farmers 09 campaign by operating a checkout at his local Woolies.

Mr Scott said the campaign was a wonderful way for consumers to show their support for the people who stock their shelves with clean, green and fresh food.

"This long, harsh drought has taken a toll on many rural and remote communities across Australia and it is great to see Woolworths not only providing financial support for our farmers, but also increasing awareness of the impact of the drought," Mr Scott said.

More than $5 million dollars is expected to be available for individual and community grants from Woolworths Backing our Farmers Day.

Application forms are now available.

CWA state president Margaret Roberts said that there are a number of avenues for assistance.

She is encouraging the rural community not to be hesitant in seeking help.

Funds will be available for Emergency Assistance Grants and Community Infrastructure projects.
