AUSTRALIA-THE COST OF WILD DOGS KILLING LIVESTOCK.

The cost of wild dogs is taking its toll on Queensland’s livestock industries, with some producers reporting up to 50pc calving losses, according to AgForce.

It is offering to help producers learn how to minimise the impact of wild dogs and wean more calves and lambs at predator control workshops to be held in Quilpie and Morven next week.

AgForce pest and weed policy advisor Jo Hall encouraged sheep and cattle producers to attend the workshops, on April 22 and 23, to learn how to boost their productivity and minimise stock losses and dog bites.

"From all reports the wild dog issue is continuing to spiral out of control, especially in south west Queensland," Ms Hall said.

"These two workshops are an opportunity for producers to hear from fellow producers and experts with sound knowledge of dog control in Queensland, as they discuss proven control methods including trapping, baiting, and the use of guard animals."

Local trapper Don Sallway will speak at the workshops, while practical examples of predator control will also be presented by the National Wild Dog facilitator Greg Mifsud, Wyandra grazier Peter Lucas, chair of the National Wild Dog Advisory Group Brent Finlay, Biosecurity Queensland zoologist Lee Allen and Maremma dog specialist Ninian Stewart-Moore.

The workshops will be held at the Quilpie Racecourse on April 22 and at the Morven Hall on April 23, starting at 8.30am each day.
