Brad Bellinger, Australian Beef Association chairman, believes that MLA’s project to reduce greenhouse emissions from cattle is a waste of taxpayer and levy funds.

He said the focus of the project, which will concentrate on genetic selection and feed supplements, should be of great concern to producers.

"To put selection pressure of cattle for low emissions would be at the detriment of profitable genetics, such as growth rate and fertility. After 30 years of EBVs, breeding values for recognisable traits still carry a disclaimer over their accuracies, many below 80 per cent," he said.

"Any balanced approach to selection for low greenhouse emitting cattle would take a lifetime to achieve."
