Beulah Speckled Face Sheep Society celebrates 50th anniversary

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Beulah Speckled Face Sheep Society. In celebration of this achievement, NFU Cymru member Gwyn Jones of Ty Mawr Farm, Garth, has opened his farm gates to fellow farmers to highlight the importance of the past, present and the future of the breed.

Mr Jones, President of the Society, farms 1,000 breeding ewes with his son Neil. They sell pedigree Beulah Speckled Face breeding ewes and rams through the Society sales and also Welsh Mules through the Welsh Mule breeding ewe and ewe lamb sales, both based in Builth Wells. The Jones family have been members of the Society since it's formation in 1958.

Mr Gwyn Jones said, "As President of the Society, hosting this event has been superb in terms of showing how the breed has developed and strengthened over the last 50 years. In recent years, we have seen the benefits of crossing our Beulah Speckled Face breeding ewes with Bluefaced Leicester rams to produce a Welsh mule, which is now the most popular commercial lamb producing ewe in Wales and the borders."

NFU Cymru Group Secretary for Builth Wells, Mike Thomas said, "Many of our members use the Beulah Speckled face breed in the area and they rely on farmers such as the Jones family to continue breeding the quality stock for which they have become well-renowned. We congratulate the Beulah Speckled Face Sheep Society on reaching its 50th anniversary and continue to support it for hopefully many years to come."
