Bio reducers - Let's waste no time

NFU Cymru members in Mid Gwynedd recently heard the latest position with on-farm bio reducers for fallen stock at the Bangor University farm Henfaes, in Abergwyngregyn.

Dr Prysor Williams, a teaching fellow at the School of Environment and Natural Resource, Bangor University was the guest speaker at the recent NFU Cymru Mid Gwynedd County meeting and he informed local farmers of the very promising results with the on-farm bio reducers that have been obtained so far.

Dafydd Jones, NFU Mid Gwynedd County Chairman said, "This is a highly important piece of research work by Bangor University with potential significant cost savings on fallen stock disposal."

NFU Cymru members present at the meeting were encouraged by the provisional results of the trial but appreciate that more work is still required to satisfy the EU Commission.

Dafydd Jones added, "We would hope that the outstanding work is completed as soon as possible. It makes no environmental nor disease bio security sense for fallen stock lorries to travel from farm to farm picking up one carcass at a time. We would also ask for some common sense from the Commission to allow farms in one area to be allowed to share bio reducers due to the initial high capital cost of installation."

At the meeting John Gwynant Hughes, NFU Cymru past County Chairman, presented the first ever Mid Gwynedd NFU Cymru members county scholarship to Osian Rhys, Hendy, Caernarfon. Osian received the £3,000 scholarship to travel to various countries to study dairy cows and the dairy industry.

He hopes to generate new ideas and implement these techniques to improve milk quality and production efficiencies on his own herd and to disseminate this information to other milk producers on his return.
