BRAZIL - NEW MEAT PLANT OPENED BY SADIA.

Brazilian meat and food processing company Sadia has opened its first plant in the north east of the country in the city of Vitória de Santo Antão, 50 kilometres from Recife.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Pernambuco state governor Eduardo Campos took part in the opening of the first factory in the beef sector in Brazil to 100 per cent neutralise its carbon emissions.

The project that was supported by a government grant of 300 million reals is expected to generate 1,500 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect jobs for the region.

The factory will produce sausage products such as baloney, hams and snack items.

The plant has a capacity to produce 147,000 tonnes of product a year and should have a turnover of 390 million reals ($173 million).

The plant also has a 16,500 sq metre distribution centre.

Luiz Fernando Furlan, Sadia’s president said the move was an important one for the company as the north east of Brazil is the part of the country that is showing the greatest potential growth.
