British machinery in drive for Swedish quality potatoes
One of Sweden's most modern vegetable packers has chosen Tong Peal for a major new investment in preparing potatoes for high quality markets.
LE Vegetables & Co (LEV) sent two of its main directors to visit several UK packers looking at Tong Peal machinery in operation, and then placed an order for a complete reception, grading, washing and polishing system with 15 tonnes/hour capacity.
"The challenge for us was to design the complete system to fit into a very compact space," says Barry Ledger, export sales manager of Tong Peal. "The system had to include our new big bag / box tipper, soil extraction and destoning as well as washing and polishing."
LEV, based at Stora Mellösa on the plains of Östernärke, was set up in 2002 to supply shops and wholesale markets with top quality produce.
Production manager Dan Jonsson says they have invested heavily in achieving and monitoring quality to satisfy customers such as ICA which is the market leader in supplying Swedish retailers.
In addition to the home-grown crop, LEV sources potatoes from leading European growers including bakers (currently Cara and Cultra) from both the UK and Cyprus.
