CAMEROON-A BUSTLING MEAT MARKET IN AFRICA.
The market for meat which was put in place during the festive period, is being transformed into a full-fledget market now. In a bid to fight against poverty and the high cost of goods and food stuff in the market, the Delegation of Trade during festive periods set up a caravan to sell at promotional prices to lower the high cost of food stuff for the population. In December a market was set up in front of the Delegation of Trade to sell meat at a reduced price from what is being sold in the market, it was an encouraging situation and wonderful initiative of the Delegation to the public because it helped all.
The festive periods are over but the market is still in place and this time is not only the meat which is being sold but other food stuff are gradually creeping in like spices, fresh tomatoes, sometimes plantains and cocoyam.
Talking to the Delegate of Trade David Tsegui, he said the market was going to continue until the price of food stuff becomes stable in the market. He said it was an initiative to fight against poverty and high cost of living and once prices have not dropped the market will continue. He added that others who have other food stuff to sell could come and create their own space in so long as they would abide by the rules of the Delegation, to sell at a reduced price.
Tsegui announced that they are seeing a possibility of arranging the garage in his office so that during weekends it becomes a complete market selling at a cheap rate. He said the president of the association of butchers in the Bonamoussadi and Bependa Markets has even moved up to him to find out if there is a possibility of creating more points to sell meat at the rate the Delegation has put in place. This market and the prices he said is gradually affecting the price of meat in the market.
Talking about going against the rules of the council to spring up a market, he said the Government Delegate appreciates their efforts and so it would not be any problem. He added that if it were possible, other public offices should create space for such markets to be set up too.
