CANADA-PIG NUMBERS IN DECLINE.

Canada’s cattle and hog industries remain in a steep contraction phase. However, producers are generally optimistic that lower input costs and higher market prices will result in a return to profitability this year.


Canadian exports of all classes of livestock to the United States are forecast to decline in 2009 reflecting inventory reductions and modest increases in Canadian slaughter levels.

Canada’s livestock industry is upset with recent developments surrounding U.S. mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) legislation which they view as a serious trade protectionist measure.
