Chico schools' only ag program recruiting future freshmen

Amidst the whistle and spark of welding torches, dozens of students recently toured the agriculture department at Chico High School to test its attractions.

The department, slated last spring to be downsized, made a comeback largely due to the efforts of community supporters. This spring the department applied for a state grant to expand facilities and serve even more students.

Events were planned to inform students who plan to attend Chico High about the program and possibly entice those who were uncertain about which high school matched their interests.

Nobody in the department is sitting around waiting for a grant approval or for enrollment numbers.

Ag teacher Quinn Mendez said teachers, students and the Friends of Chico High Ag Program have worked hours and hours this spring to improve the facilities, donating time, labor and materials.
