Chile is to build the largest wind farm in Latin America, that is costing over US$1 billion.

Spain’s energy company Grupo Ethanol and Chili’s company Haciendas Talinay, made the announcement on Friday.

The facility 410 km north of Santiego should be completed by 2011,it will include aerial lines to transmit the power to major cities.

The facility will prevent 19 million tons of carbon emissions, between 2011 and 2024.

The facility will also be creating much needed employment in the region.
