China bans pork imports from Mexico, 3 US states, amid swine flu scare
Beijing: China’s government says it has banned imports of pork and pork products from Mexico and three US states in an effort to block the spread of swine flu.
No meat shipped after Sunday will be allowed into the country, according to a notice on the product safety department’s Web site. Shipments already in the country will only be released after being certified as safe.
The three US states named were California and Texas, which border Mexico, and Kansas, a major producer of pork products.
The ban was likely just the first of a series of measures in response to the global outbreak, which is believed to have killed more than 100 people in Mexico and sickened more than 1,600 people.
