China broke the world record for pork imports in 2008, besting the previous 2005 high by Japan, the U.S. Meat Export Federation says in a Tuesday release. China, together with Hong Kong, bought 1.925 million tons of pork last year, beating the Japanese record of 1.022 million tons. The USMEF estimates that China bought about 386,000 tons of pork from the U.S. in 2008, worth about $700 million.
