There are around a million donkey and pony skins processed in China every year, they are now sourcing more raw material from Australia.
Many brumby (wild horses) and donkey skins are thrown away in the Northern Territory each year, after the meat is taken for pet food.
The salted hides are worth around $30 each as wet salted hides, making them a valuable harvest.
China are the biggest buyers of Australian lamb skins and wool today.
