CLA broadband campaign produces fastest ever result
The CLA is delighted by media reports today (15 January) that the Government is planning a universal service obligation for broadband.
If implemented, this would enable everyone in the UK access to broadband up to 2 megabits per second by 2012, according to the reports.
Furthermore - if the details that have so far found their way into the media are correct - reliance on private sector funding may not be the stumbling block it currently is as the government is quoted as saying that, if necessary, it will "impose a solution."
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "We are delighted the Government has supported our calls since the beginning of the year for broadband for all. The CLA believes it is essential for all rural businesses to have access to affordable, high-speed broadband.
"However, the Government has still failed to realise that a universal broadband service requires major public sector investment. We are well aware that there remains significant concern in the private sector as to how such an obligation can be given."
The CLA President added: "We also remain concerned as to how a universal service obligation can be delivered. Principles are fine but without the ability to put such words into concrete action, we are not much further forward.
"Of course, we still haven’t seen the final report and we will be seeking an urgent meeting with Lord Carter to ensure rural interests are not left out. This will include CLA concerns as to what happens between now and 2012."
