CLAAS announce 2006 engineering Scholarship winner

Christopher Vicary (centre), whose family have a contracting business in Yorkshire, has been awarded the 2006 CLAAS Scholarship for Agricultural Engineering. Congratulating Christopher is Alastair Tulloch (Head of After Sales, CLAAS UK) with Peter Darkins (left, Industrial Liaison Manager at HAUC); Jane Broomhall (CLAAS UK Group Personnel Manager) and Sylvia Looks (right, CLAAS Foundation co-ordinator).

The CLAAS Group has announced the winner of its second Scholarship for Agricultural Engineering which was launched this time last year.

A total of three Scholarships are to be awarded, one each in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Scholarship covers the successful student's fees for the whole of their four-year degree at Harper Adams University College and is open to all first year students studying a B.Eng Hons; B.Sc. Hons Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural Engineering Marketing & Management degrees.

The 2006 CLAAS Scholarship has been awarded to Christopher Vicary, whose family have an agricultural contracting business in East Yorkshire. Christopher is in his first year and is studying BEng Agricultural Engineering.

As part of the Scholarship, Christopher will also be offered a summer placement with CLAAS UK, and a 1-year sandwich placement at the CLAAS Group headquarters at Harsewinkel, Germany. On completion of his degree, he will be offered a position with either the CLAAS Group or CLAAS UK. It is also expected that the CLAAS Scholar acts as an ambassador for the company during their time at Harper Adams.

With demand for engineers currently exceeding the number of graduates, recent years have seen numbers enrolling for the engineering degree courses at HAUC rise by around 10% per annum. In selecting a Scholar, CLAAS not only take into consideration the applicant's academic background, but also their character, skills and enthusiasm for agricultural engineering.

The CLAAS Scholarship was established last year, following a visit made in 2005 by Helmut Claas and Dr Hermann Garbers (Executive Vice President Technology & Quality) to Harper Adams as part of their commitment to training the agricultural engineers of the future.

In seeking to establish a more diverse international community of young engineers, Dr Claas has recognised the need to encourage a wider spread of international engineers, especially in the area of field-testing.

The CLAAS Group currently has engineering centres in America, India, Hungary, France and Germany. In basing the CLAAS Scholarship with Harper Adams University College CLAAS not only recognises the fact that HAUC is the only UK University to offer an agricultural engineering degree, but also the need for engineers that speak a universal language such as English.
