Graziers have been given the green light to continue leasing common land rights thanks to a new government order – a move welcomed by the NFU.

Commoners will be able to let most rights of common land to other graziers for up to two years ensuring rights can continue to be managed within the local community.

NFU and LFA spokesman Will Cockbain said: "This short-term letting of rights made sense to all involved. The amendment will free up the ability of commons to continue to thrive.

"This common sense approach to the matter shows the way in which a partnership between industry and government can work.

"We acknowledge there is still more work to be done in this area and the NFU looks forward to taking a full role in responding to Governments proposal to consult early in 2007."

The amendment to permit short term letting of common rights within the Commons Act 2006 will come into force from September 9 2006 but has effect from June 28 2005.
