Compensation delays prolong uncertainty for HS2 route

Homes and businesses affected by the High Speed Two (HS2) rail line face prolonged uncertainty over compensation packages, the CLA said today.

The government has delayed a consultation until after Parliament returns in early September. The association had previously urged the government to order an immediate and comprehensive review of compulsory purchase law for all private acquisitions.

"Land and property owners along the HS2 route deserve an early consultation on a non-statutory blight compensation scheme" said CLA President Harry Cotterell.

"The commitment by the minster to go ‘above and beyond’ the statutory requirements for compensation is welcome but this delay prolongs the uncertainty for those affected, leaving land, homes, businesses and lives in limbo."

Mr Cotterell added: "Current compulsory purchase orders do not provide adequate protection for property owners. Those who stand to lose homes and businesses because of this rail route must be treated fairly and compensation resolved quickly."
