Condemned cattle liver disposal dilemma

An abattoir has warned that farmers may soon have to share the cost of disposing of condemned cattle livers.

The industry already loses £3 million a year because of the 40 per cent of livers condemned at slaughter that cannot enter the food chain or be used for pet food, mainly as a result of fluke infestation.

But Alan McNaughton, managing director of the Aberdeen-based McIntosh Donald, warns abattoirs are also tiring of the £70 per tonne it costs them to dispose of those livers.
