Corbyn reportedly 'going through the process' of turning vegan
Lifelong vegetarian Jeremy Corbyn has apparently hinted that he is considering switching to becoming a vegan.
The Labour leader, who has been a vegetarian for decades, told retail workers at an event hosted by Lush that he is “going through the process” of eating more vegan food.
However, the Labour Party has denied this, saying that he meant that he is “in the process” of eating more vegan food.
Vegans abstain from anything containing dairy produce and eggs as well as meat and fish. As a vegetarian, Mr Corbyn does not eat meat.
Mr Corbyn explained: “I eat more and more vegan food, and have more and more vegan friends, indeed there are quite a lot of vegan MPs actually - not a lot but there are some.
The Labour leader praised the increasing quality of vegan dishes.
He said: “So I’m going through the process all right? I won’t go any further than that.”
Mr Corbyn has been a vegetarian for almost 50 years. But he has often talked in the past about his love of dairy products such as cheese and cake.
The comments come at a time when the dairy industry is fighting a promotional battle with vegans.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) dairy team has created a ‘Proud of Dairy’ campaign to promote the health benefits of dairy and the high-standards of animal welfare amid anti-dairy activism.
The NFU said they are proud of the hard work and high standards of British dairy farmers.
