Cucumber relay races (with cucumbers instead of batons) and a search for the "World’s Longest Cucumber" are two of the more unusual activities that will be occurring at the Great British Cucumber Festival.
Members of the public are being challenged to take along their longest cucumber to see if they have what it takes to beat the current world record, while the 4 x 100m cucumber relay will see teams of four compete against other growers and packhouses to secure their victory.
"Waltham Abbey Loves Food" (the Waltham Abbey Town Partnership initiative), the NFU and Red Tractor will be joining forces to celebrate the contributions of growers from the Lea Valley, notably UK Salads, Abbeyview, Valley Grown Salads and Glinwell. The joint contribution to the local economy will be recognised through a celebration of the cucumber and other salads.
The event will be held on Saturday, 17th September 2011 in the Abbey Gardens, Waltham Abbey, from 12.00pm to 4.00pm. People will have the opportunity to pose with a giant cucumber mascot and listen to tunes at the "Cool as a Cucumber" main stage, providing a fun day out for all ages to enjoy.
David Clarke, CEO at Red Tractor Assurance, the UK’s leading quality food assurance mark, said: "We are looking forward to attending what is certain to be an entertaining day out for families, while helping to support all of the Red Tractor growers who will be present at the event. We hope shoppers look out for the Red Tractor logo for confidence in the food they’re buying and the high standards met by Red Tractor farmers and growers."
