Dairy farmer Chris James joins DairyCo board

Mr James, who was appointed by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, farms in partnership with his brother in Pembrokeshire, milking 1800 cows on four units covering 700ha.

The herds are spring calving and the system is forage based, maximising milk output from grass. The business also has another unit near to the main enterprise at Stackpole Home Farm for rearing surplus male calves for the beef market.

Mr James says he is committed to representing the needs of levy payers on the board. "As a levy payer, I am aware that DairyCo should represent value for money and that the market and research data and other information should be informative and relevant to all sectors of the dairy industry,’’ he says.

"That information should lead trends, not follow trends. Information should be sourced from around the world to help the levy payer make decisions to improve the profitability on their own farms.’’

Next year, Stackpole Home Farm will be a host farm for the British Grassland Society Summer Visits. Mr James is a member and past chairman of a local discussion group and Grassland Society.

DairyCo Chairman Tim Bennett said: "I’m pleased to be welcoming Chris to the DairyCo board. I’m sure he’s going to provide a valuable contribution to the work that we do and I, along with the existing members of the board, look forward to working with him."
