Fayre Game is seeking to develop the market for quail products following its acquisition this summer by the Tom Barron Group, the diversified family food and farming business.
The UK's major quail supplier is now breeding larger birds for the meat market and also introducing 'free to fly' aviaries to respond to the growing demand for free range food.
"We see considerable potential to develop sales of all types of quail products for both the retail and catering markets," says Mike Haines, commercial director of Tom Barron.
"In the meat sector the demand is shifting from the 150-160 gram bird up towards 200 grams, and we are selecting heavier quail for our breeding programme.
"In another part of our business we have seen the growth in demand for egg laying stock for free range systems, and this is reflected in the quail sector, too," he says.
"Our outdoor verandas are designed to be welfare friendly as well as provide greater freedom for the birds as we aim for Freedom Foods recognition."
