Drought, farming, industry blamed for rivers decline

The State Government says the results of a new report into northern Tasmanian rivers and streams are encouraging.

The State of the Region Report brings together data from key environmental groups.

It has found most of the rivers and streams in the region are in good health based on a number of factors including river flows and animal and plant life.

51 sites were monitored and among those to receive an 'A' rating included the Patersonia Rivulet, Rocky Creek and Scamander River, while the worst result was for the Kings Meadows Rivulet at Punchbowl.

The Environment Minister, Michelle O'Byrne, says the report will help identify waterways in need of extra attention.

"The data that we have now allows us to focus on those rivers that need our help and particularly the parts of those rivers," she said.
