NEW CATTLE MARKET.

The local council in Melton Mowbray, in the Midland’s of England is contributing one million pound sterling towards a new cattle market for the town. The market will stay at the same site in the center of the town.

The demise of the English cattle markets is the same as the world over, as farmers prefer to sell their stock direct to the abattoir and meat plants, cutting out the auctioneers commission. However a large number of sheep especially ewes are still sold through the auction system, where the farmer can take the animal home, if he is not satisfied with the price, this cannot be done when selling to the meat plant.

The Midlands of England being heavily populated, used to boast some of the largest fat stock markets in the country, Rugby on a Monday, Melton on Tuesday, Leicester on Wednesday, Banbury on Thursday and Market Harborough on Friday finishing up with Bedford on Saturdays.
