Ethiopia should abolish a shipping monopoly to cut trading costs, the Reporter said, citing a report prepared for the country’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Ethiopian importers must currently obtain a bill of lading from the government’s Ethiopian Shipping Lines before obtaining foreign currency, the Addis Ababa-based newspaper said. Ethiopian shipping costs are 70 percent higher than those of rival ports in east Asia and Europe, the newspaper said.
