Farm deaths prompt NFU safety days

Alarming numbers of deaths and injuries on farms prompted NFU Secretary Maria Norejko, to organise a special safety day for farmers, farm workers and their families at Myddfai Village Hall yesterday.

New figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 34 people were killed in accidents on farms in 2011 - over three times as many as the UK industry average.

Maria Norejko NFU Cymru Group Secretary at the Llandovery office said, "There is a lot of interest in safety issues as witnessed by the number of local farmers who attended the safety day. It’s clear that farmers are looking to reduce risks on their own farms and as a rural organisation NFU Cymru is keen to provide any help it can to our members.

"The event included presentations on common causes of accidents, advice on safe working practices and current health and safety legislations. There were also practical sessions on farm machinery safety."
