Farm group wants rural apprenticeships scheme back

The Western Australian Farmers Federation says it is imperative that money for a funding program for agriculture apprenticeships is reinstated in today's Federal Budget.

The Apprenticeship Incentives for Agriculture and Horticulture Scheme was abolished by the Rudd Government earlier this year.

The scheme was announced last year to encourage workers into agriculture and horticulture, which are both struggling to secure staff.

The federation's director of policy, Andy McMillan, says all the indications are that the program will be reinstated today.

He says investment in the agriculture industry is essential.

"It's vitally important to the future of the country," he said.
