Farmers lead in lake protection
Farmers around Bassenthwaite are ahead of the conservation game and have taken up the gauntlet of coming to the rescue of a troubled lake.
Nearly ninety per cent are taking part in protection initiatives to help halt sediment and fertiliser getting into the lake, according to Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) officer Karen Austin.
In the wake of an Environment Agency national study, which found 379 of the country's most ecologically valuable lakes in need of urgent rehabilitation, Karen praised local farmers for
taking 'firm and positive steps on the restoration trail'.
"They have been very keen to get involved in a range of CSF initiatives and responded enthusiastically to offers of advice and assistance," she said.
"Our farmers are well aware of the problems in and around Bassenthwaite Lake and have willingly joined the campaign to tackle them.
"They have taken part in a series of workshops designed to offer a raft of practical help, ranging from soil analysis to fertiliser use and have welcomed us on to their land to talk through action plans."
The CSF project has already helped most of the area's farmers analyse soil, identify field nutrient levels and manage fertiliser use and waste.
"We have had numerous well-attended gatherings to look at soil conditions and management, reducing erosion and the effective use of fertilisers and muck to stem excess nitrates and phosphates entering water courses," added Karen.
"Many have received free one to one advice from experienced local advisers on matters specific to their farm, including riverbank erosion, midden design and manure management.
"The idea is to provide practical solutions that work on the ground and benefit both farm business and the surrounding environment, including Bassenthwaite Lake."
Two further workshops are planned next week on Monday 5 March, at Threlkeld Hall Farm, Threlkeld and Tuesday 6 March, at High Side Farm, Bassenthwaite, both running from 10am until 12 noon.
