Farmers need cash now: agriculture critic

Agricultural critic Wayne Easter believes it is about time the Conservative government did something to correct the problems that face Canadian hog and beef farmers.

That was the Liberal MPs message during a roundtable discussion held in Sunderland on Saturday.

After the roundtable, Easter held a meet and greet at Coffee Grounds in Lindsay, before attending another discussion in Lakefield on Sunday.

During Easters stop at Coffee Grounds, he told The Lindsay Post what he believes is the result of the hog and beef industries plight.

"I think there's no question the hog and beef industry is in its most severe crisis," he said.

"The Harper government has failed to address the problems these farmers face. The bottom line is . . . no cash has gone out to the producers.

"It has been a cruel joke to these producers . . . there needs to be an immediate cash infusion to hog and beef farmers."
