Farmers play their part in cleaning up

Farmers have today been praised by the Environment Agency (EA) for their record on reducing pollution.

In its annual review on the environmental performance of business, the EA reported that there had been a 25% cut in the number of serious pollution incidents - the best results since EA records began.

EA Chief Executive, Barbara Young, said she was "delighted to report encouraging progress. It is important to bear in mind that there are many farmers out there who are working to minimise their impact on the environment and are doing so innovatively."

The agency also reported it was, "extremely pleased to see that farmers have taken up a significant number of resource protection measures", like Entry Level Stewardship.

Bernard Llewellyn, Chairman of NFU Cymru Rural Affairs Board said: "This report shows just how much farmers are doing to care and nurture the countryside. Welsh farmers work extremely hard to improve the beautiful countryside that surrounds us, making rural areas a pleasure for everyone to visit. This report is evidence of our work and shows our commitment to the environment.

He added: "Farmers welcome the recognition of their contribution. With CAP reform imminent, cross compliance measures could include principles such as keeping farmland in Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition. This report just goes to show that farmers are aware of their working practices and will always be the best people to nourish and develop the Welsh countryside."
