Farmers set to tell the farming story with #CowsOnTour at a London school

#CowsOnTour, which consists of a group of enthusiastic Welsh farmers from NFU Cymru and Glamorgan YFC will be heading to a school in inner city London on Monday, 21 March, in an attempt to educate children on how food is produced.

The initiative, first coined by local farmer, James Hanks, with the help of Glamorgan NFU Cymru County Chairman, Abi Reader, was a huge success last year with pupils from the primary school in Holloway, London, describing it as the ‘best day of their lives’.

With this in mind, the group of Welsh farmers are re-visiting the school again this year, offering a day full of farming fun to over 300 children.

Abi Reader said: “I’m a strong believer that learning about food is an important element of school children’s education and last year it was great to see how engaged the pupils were with the farming story by the end of the day.

“#CowsOnTour aims to get children to understand where their food comes from and the journey from farm to plate.

We will start the process by explaining where milk and flour comes from and then show the steps involved in achieving the end product, as a way of illustrating how the entire food chain works.

We will be working with children ranging from three to eleven and hope to incorporate how agriculture has progressed and developed through generations in order to ensure that food is produced for the nation.

“Thank you to NFU Cymru, Muller Milk and Ingredients, Ty Tanglwyst Dairy, Country Fresh Eggs, the British Wool Marketing Board, AHDB and Red Tractor for supporting the event.

This exercise is an opportunity to showcase what we as Welsh farmers do in terms of food production whilst delivering environmental benefits, and we will highlight the importance of the agricultural sector to the general public.”

The school in London is the first stop of the year for #CowsOnTour, however the group of farmers are also planning to visit schools in the Glamorgan area, ensuring that the farming story is shared with as many children as possible.
