Farmers to get update on Anglesey nuclear plan

Anglesey farmers will be able to find out more in November about the proposed nuclear power development on the island.

Guest speaker at the next NFU Cymru Anglesey branch meeting will be Alan Smith, Head of Site Development with Horizon Nuclear Power. Mr Smith will be giving a 20-minute presentation to include an overview of the Horizon project at Wylfa and an update on its status, followed by a 30 to 40 minute question and answer session.

NFU Cymru Anglesey Branch Chairman Dewi Jones said, "We welcome this opportunity to get the developer’s view of the Wylfa B project and the latest information. Many of our members have voiced deep concerns about the impact of the new power station and all the infrastructure work required and, in particular, the possibility of farmland acquisition by compulsory purchase. I have said on previous occasions that negotiation and not compulsion is the way forward. It’s in all our interests to negotiate for options that are less intrusive and less impactful on our island landscape.

"Anglesey is well known as the bread basket of Wales. Consumer confidence in our products is paramount and we will be seeking categorical assurances from the development company about the safety of their proposals," Mr Jones added.
