Farming futures on the agenda as NFU kicks off its next generation policy forum
Key issues facing the future of farming will be on the agenda when the newly formed NFU Next Generation Policy Forum meets for the first time today.
Comprising 16 young farmers from England and Wales, the participants were selected from over 60 applications following the launch of the scheme in August. Each member was chosen because of their keen interest, passion and expertise in the industry and it is hoped their views will be a valuable contribution to long-term NFU thinking.
Held at NFU headquarters in Stoneleigh Park, the meeting will be chaired by NFU Vice President Gwyn Jones, and will cover issues such as CAP reform and bovine Tb, as well as taking a detailed look at each different farming sector.
Mr Jones said: "This forum is so important for the future of the farming industry. Ensuring the NFU hears the thoughts and concerns of the next generation of farmers, the people who will be at the heart of the industry in the future is absolutely vital.
"Engaging with the next generation of farmers and growers, and bringing them into the fold to discuss the issues that we will face in the coming years means as an organisation, we will be better prepared to cope with the challenges that come our way.
"We are really pleased that so many people wanted to take part in the forum, and I am very keen to get going to ensure the future of farming is as bright as possible."
