Farming tradition a priority
WINDSOR — In a nod to the town's agricultural heritage, Windsor has approved the creation of a special commission to ensure the dirt, grass and open landscape aren't forgotten amidst development.
In a special meeting last week, a majority of residents voted in favor of a measure making Windsor the 14th Berkshire County community to set up an agricultural commission.
The duties of the commission's three members — to be appointed by the Board of Selectmen — will include working to preserve agriculture and forest land, encouraging the pursuits of agriculture in Windsor, promoting agricultural-based economic opportunities and advising other town boards on agricultural issues.
Windsor resident and agricultural enthusiast Kate Markowitz began petitioning the town to create a commission in early summer with the hope of highlighting opportunities for educating the community.
