Farming will play key role in future economy

No matter how deep the economic recession, one of Britain’s leading bankers has few doubts that farming is one of the best positioned industries to weather the storm.

Guest speaker at NFU Cymru’s Centenary dinner at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium yesterday evening (Wednesday, November 26), HSBC Bank’s chief executive, Dyfrig John, said that despite the challenges he was confident the industry would continue to adapt, show resilience and play a key role in the economy in the next 100 years.

Brought up on a Pembrokeshire dairy far, he said rural life had always been hard – but there were some optimistic signs for rural communities.
