Future needs of British Pig Industry
A COMPREHENSIVE review of future pig research requirements is to be carried out by the British Pig Executive in conjunction with industry bodies. The aim is to determine what work is being carried out, identify any gaps and make sure the British pig industry has the most relevant and effective research base to meet its needs over the next 10 to 15 years. The review will include an in depth look at the Stotfold Pig Development Unit which has been at the forefront of pig research for many years. BPEX Chairman Stewart Houston said: "The Government has today launched its health and welfare strategy for the livestock farming industry and we are actively engaged in shaping this specifically for the pig industry. "Effective and efficient research and development will be a key part of delivering that strategy and BPEX is leading a fundamental review of the future research and development needs which will include the role of Stotfold." An independent report is being commissioned examining options for the future as the first stage of the process. That will be presented at the end of the year and discussed by BPEX early in the new year. BPEX will then undertake extensive and thorough industry consultations.
