FUW Veteran Bryn keen to pass on crop growing skills

FUW member and veteran farm crops exhibitor Bryn Lloyd has offered to share his know-how to young and old alike in a bid to prevent local produce classes at agricultural shows being consigned to history.

"I am concerned at the falling numbers of competitors in these classes and I am keen to encourage others to support their local shows. There are a few older people still showing but there is no new blood coming through," said 76-year-old Mr Lloyd, of Cwmisdwr Farm, Pentrecwrt, near Llandysul, Ceredigion.

"Local shows are a source of excellent recreational activities and a chance to meet up with others who share the same interests. But the youngsters don't seem to have the interest.

"I strongly recommend that more people become involved and I'm ready to pass on my experiences and give advice," he added.

And he certainly has the experience. He started exhibiting 52 years ago in the first ever class for "a field of crops" in the Llandysul Show. It was the same class he won consistently at Llandysul, Newcastle Emlyn and Cardigan shows until it was discontinued.

But since then he has continued to have huge success showing farm crops and regularly won the best in class at many other shows throughout Wales. Only last year he was the winner of the best farm crops class at the All-Wales Ploughing Show at Nevern, Pembrokeshire.

After over half a century of success, he has just started to scale down his showing activities and is now a well-known judge at many shows in Wales.
