Good trade at Shrewsbury Christmas Livestock show

Auctioneers Halls reported a good trade in the beef and lamb section at Shrewsbury Auction Centre’s annual Christmas Beef and Lamb Show and Sale.

Champion beast in the beef section was a 470 kilo Belgian Blue cross heifer from Barry Tomlinson of Broxton, Chester which sold for 285p per kilo to market regular Tony Kirkham of Tarporley.

Reserve champion and champion steer was a 700 kilo Limousin cross steer from John and Nettie Bowyer from Stoke on Trent, which sold for 245p per kilo to Moorland Meats Ltd, Longton, Stoke on Trent.

Champion bull was a 665 kilo Limousin from H. P. Price and Sons, The Woodlands, Bicton, which sold for 198p per kilo to Messrs A. J. Green and Sons, Golden Hill, Stoke on Trent.

Overall averages in the beef section were 205p per kilo for steers and 208p per kilo for heifers.

The prizes for the champion and reserve champion pens of lambs went to Messrs S. H. Hillage and Sons, Marshbrook, Church Stretton, a regular supporter of the market. The champion pen, which also won the medium weight class, weighed 43.5 kilos and sold for ’107.50 per head.

Reserve champion pen of lambs and winner of the heavyweight class weighed 48 kilos and sold for ’108.50 per head. Both pens sold to Moorland Meats Ltd. The prize for lightweight champion pen of lambs went to James Edwards of Llanfair Caereinion.

A roaring lamb trade produced an overall market average of 220p per kilo, which was one of the top prices in the country last week.

The Christmas Show and Sale was sponsored by Santander and the judges were Mr Dai Richards, Llanfechain, in the beef and Mr Clive Gittins, Cleobury Mortimer, in the lambs.
