Gov Canvasses New Agriculture Policy

Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State has canvassed a new national policy on agriculture as part of efforts to ensure food security in the country.

Shema said the nation could no longer afford to treat the issue of agriculture and food security with levity, but that a deliberate, sustained and result oriented policy must be adopted to promote the sector, as any nation that ignores its agricultural potentials and fails to feed its people will inevitably end up in deep trouble.

He also called for a pragmatic collaboration between the three tiers of government and other key stakeholders in agriculture to redefine and redirect farming practices in the country, and particularly sought for definite measures to encourage farmers to take irrigation seriously, such that farming in the country would be an all the year round endeavor.
