Government must support farmers

I recently read an article stating that "farmers must be recognized as saviours of our world," "The world needs its farmers," Ross Readhead, May 17.

We hear that our civilization is facing a food shortage, and I believe only farmers can help us through this crisis since they produce the food we eat.

Without farmers, it would be up to individual families to grow their own crops and raise livestock, not leaving much time for anything else.

Farming is a difficult and unpredictable industry. It is clear that farmers are an asset to any community, but as time goes on, the number of farms decreases. The costs of sustaining a farm are constantly increasing, yet the amount farmers are earning is not rising quickly enough to cover these costs, forcing them to leave farming behind and look for other sources of income to support their families.
