Govt sticks by Daly land clearing moratorium

A cattle station owner in the Douglas Daly region has applied to clear part of his land to run more cattle, in defiance of a moratorium on land clearing in the area.

The owner of the Bonalbo cattle station Ian McBean lodged an application to clear 300 hectares of native vegetation with the Department of Lands and Planning in December.

The application says it would allow Bonalbo to increase its cattle holding from 3500 to 4200 at a time when exporters are being forced to bring stock from Queensland to keep up with demand.

In December last year, Chief Minister Paul Henderson angered cattle farmers by extending a four-year moratorium on land clearing in the Douglas Daly Region for another two years.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature has lodged its formal opposition to the application.
