Grass seed contracts available to growers
New opportunities to grow the highly successful Aber agricultural and amenity ryegrass seeds should interest farmers looking for a profitable alternative crop for 2007.
So says William Gilbert, managing director with British Seed Houses, who points to growing demand for high quality homebred varieties and greater price stability as factors that are making the enterprise more attractive.
“Grass seed production fulfils many of the criteria for an added value alternative enterprise and should be a consideration for many,” he says. “It can suit arable or mixed farming situations and brings a number of benefits to the rotation as well as a healthy gross margin.
“British Seed Houses is actively looking for more growers and it is not too late to consider it as an option for the coming autumn drilling season.”
Interested growers should contact British Seed Houses’ seed production manager Alex Burgon in the first instance on 07713 878068, or request a Herbage Seed Production Farm Bulletin from the Bristol (0117 982 3691) or Lincoln (01522 868714) offices.
