Grumpy the pig is new year's busiest mum

AFTER giving birth to more than 50 piglets in the past 12 months, Grumpy could be forgiven for living up to her name.

The three-year-old sow can lay claim to the title of Britain's busiest mum after having a series of large litters since the beginning of last year.

The average female pig gives birth to 22 youngsters a year - but Grumpy has achieved more than twice that number.

Her latest brood were born at Pondhead Farm, Lyndhurst, during the final few seconds of 2007.

Now her owner, Pat Mabbutt, believes that Grumpy may have set a new record for the number of piglets produced in a year.

Pat, 54, told the Daily Echo: "We've been keeping pigs for four years and Grumpy was among the first to be born on the farm.
