Hereford cattle stars of the future on show

Stars of the future in the Hereford cattle breed will be on display at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on Saturday.

Auctioneers Halls are hosting the Hereford Cattle Breeders Association’s third National Christmas Calf Show, with 140 calves entered. All the calves must have been born after September 1, 2009.

Association chairman Phillip Allman said: "These calves will be on the national show circuit next year. Winners of this show for the past two years have gone on to big things. For example, last year’s winner went on to become the bull of the year and was sold for 7,000 guineas.

"For farmers looking to buy show heifers for next year, this is the place to be. Some of the calves may be for sale by private negotiation."

Casting an eye over the calves will be internationally respected judge Sean McKiernan from Ireland.

Mr Allman explained that the association is based in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire but entries for the show have been received from across England and Wales.

"It’s the third time we have held this calf show at Shrewsbury Auction Centre, which is an ideal venue," he added.
