High worm burdens confirm the need for treatment

Statistics show that nearly all cattle have a worm burden; now Merial Animal Health is reminding farmers of the value of a worming treatment, with a special offer on Eprinex® pour-on for all ages of cattle.

"There is a parasitic burden in over 83 per cent of dairy cows and clinical signs are rarely seen in adult cattle," according to Brian Rice, technical and marketing manager at Merial. "Therefore, the parasite burden can go undetected by farmers, possibly leading to production losses.

"A worm burden in a herd can have a large effect on fertility, by increased calving intervals and increased returns to service," Mr Rice points out. "When using Eprinex in first calf heifers, research has shown a 13-day reduction in calving intervals and 20% better first service pregnancy rates may be achieved."

Housing is an ideal time to worm cattle with Eprinex, for ease of management and to remove any existing worm burden through the housed period. It also reduces the risk of reinfecting pastures when cattle are turned out in spring.
