HONG KONG-HK restaurant registers busy in 2008
In 2008, Hong Kong’s restaurants generated food and beverages sales of over US$10.1 billion, 13% higher than in 2007 (United States Department of Agriculture).
Last year, Hong Kong boasted 11,116 restaurants, serving a wide range of world cuisines. Of all restaurants, 45% were Chinese, 40% were non-Chinese restaurants and 15% comprised of fast food outlets. In addition, there were over 1,000 bars, pubs and other eating and drinking establishments.
Chinese restaurants are popular among local citizens and tourists, where a typical lunch last year cost around HK$100–HK$300 (A$15–A$45) per person and an average dinner cost about HK$150–HK$400 (A$22–A$60) per person.
Non-Chinese restaurants include western food, Japanese food, fast food and coffee houses, ranging from and casual dining establishments to fine-dining restaurants. Many Hong Kong consumers enjoy western food, as do nearly 30 million tourists (in 2008). Last year, a typical lunch and dinner at a western restaurant cost around HK$100–HK$300 (A$15–A$45) and HK$200–500 (A$30–A$75) per person, respectively.
Fast food outlets are also popular among Hong Kong consumers, with the most popular fast food chains being McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut. In 2008, the average breakfast cost around HK$25 (A$4), HK$30 (A$5) for lunch, HK$20 (A$3) for afternoon tea and HK$50 (A$7) for dinner.
