India-3 Abattoirs closed.

INDIA.

THREE MAIN ABATTOIRS CLOSED.

In Bangalore the three main abattoirs were closed down on January 1, in order to have renovations ands be generally modernized and cleaned up.

The plants at Yeshwanthpur and City Market and Tannery Road were expected to be re-opened by the end of January.

There was an application made to the High Court of Karnataka in the meantime, requesting the abattoir b re-situated on the outskirts of the city, and the application has been granted to the Government, meaning that the abattoirs will not be allowed to re-open.

The abattoir at Tannery Road ins the only beef abattoir in the region and this new order means there will be no beef for the tourist trade.

India is not a beef eating country for religious reasons, however tourism is the largest source of foreign currency with over 15 million visitors a year.

The meat companies operating the abattoirs have appealed the decision, but the years of complaints by city dwellers, make it very unlikely that the abattoirs now closed will ever re-open.
